Above: Plan of the proposed Garfield Boulevard Tunnel beneath Washington Park

A plan, above, shows the AASHTO-compliant arrangement of the underground tunnels beneath Washington Park.  The route facilitates mass transit, and provides for the construction of an indoor, intermodal transfer between the CTA Green Line and bus rapid transit.  The new bus rapid transit line, discussed previously by the City of Chicago and others, would extend from the Chicago lakefront on the east to Midway airport on the west.

Tunnel entrances and exits are planned at Garfield Boulevard, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Cottage Grove, and East 55th Street.  This configuration helps to eliminate any adverse impact of additional traffic from the Obama Presidential Center by implementing grade-separated crossings, and maintains direct routes to primary destinations for travelers moving through the park in an arterial fashion.  Note that access to the Level 1 Trauma Center at the University of Chicago is also made faster, safer, and more direct – a critical application, where seconds truly matter.  Visibility for the DuSable Museum is also increased by the reorientation of approach.
