Above: To-Scale study of current Land Use in the Washington Park Neighborhood
The author’s detailed, 2-mile square study of all zoning lots and existing structures in the vicinity of Twin Embraces evinces a deep and immediate need for investment. Red and black markings on the diagram shown here represent vacant and disused land (not parking lots, pocket parks, gardens, industrial yards, and so on). These lots represent a depletion of residents and vibrancy which compound to hurt the neighborhood in direct and meaningful ways. Vacant land depletes the city tax base, lowers property values, supports criminal activity, and typically is perceived as an eyesore and nuisance to residents. Emptiness begets emptiness. It is hard to establish a viable business or destination in an area that feels forsaken and forlorn.
The Washington Park location and diverse program of the Barack Obama Presidential Center is uniquely situated to begin a process of urban revitalization in this important Chicago district. By providing a distinct and noble use in a highly visible location, the neighborhood can be differentiated from all others in Chicago and indeed in the United States. Positioned strategically along Garfield Boulevard and the CTA Green Line, it is easy to appreciate how new life can come to the area’s commercial and cultural institutions by virtue of the thoughtful fusion of the Center and the historic neighborhood’s vast opportunities for inclusive growth.
